Ergonomic Working Guidelines
When sitting at a desk
Sit in the traditional upright position with knee and hip joint at right angles. Do not lean forward or slouch.
Always reach directly in front of you rather that reaching sideways.
Always turn your body around rather that twisting to reach behind you.
When standing for any length of time, make sure your work location is at elbow height.
Do not hesitate to make small adjustments to your workstation such as changing your seat height.
Keep your shoulders level.
Stand up and stretch periodically.
When sitting at a computer
When using a keyboard on a computer, support wrists and hands with a wrist rest.
Adjust your keyboard surface height to 23-28 inches above the ground.
If wearing corrective lenses, a slight brown, gray or pink tint helps prevent against eyestrain.
Loosen hand and wrist muscles. Keep hands flat not curved when using a keyboard.
The computer monitor should be positioned 16-24 inches from the eyes, with the top of the screen just below eye level. Bifocal glasses may require top of screen lower than eye level.
Tilt screen downward to prevent glare when applicable.
Clean dust and dirt from monitor screen on a regular basis.
Documentation should be placed at the same level and distance as the screen to avoid having to shift eye focus continually.
Do not hesitate to adjust your screen tilt and brightness/contract on your monitor.
Have your vision checked regularly.
