Other contracting firms for which I have worked have touted their training programs, but most were available only on-line and of dubious utility and quality.   They also tended to be of use only to dev/test, system engineer, or DBA types.

Once I took one class, I have taken an average of more than one a month.  I am currently enrolled in the SQL Server cert track V679 series.  I have competed the Project + certification, and have taken other classes ranging from SharePoint to MCF.

A couple of people with whom I work wish that they had known about the learning opportunities before they signed with their current firms.

And don’t forget that the cost is low.

Top Job Trends in Software Engineering

Volt's technical training division, VTE, monitors software engineering job trends in the Pacific Northwest, and at Microsoft in particular. Over the past few weeks we are seeing strong demand for employees with knowledge of the technologies associated with Visual Studio 2008. These new technologies include WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation, the new graphics subsystem, formerly codenamed Avalon), XAML (Extensible Application Markup Language, a means to modularize UI design), LINQ (Language Integrated Query, a unified way to work with any data source from within a .NET program), the .NET Framework version 3.5 (which is a fairly significant enhancement), and WCF (Windows Communication Foundation, the new unified distributed computing model, formerly codenamed Indigo).

Additionally, we see continued very strong demand for technical project management skills, C# coding skills, ASP.NET coding skills, and SQL skills (both SQL administration and SQL development). Engineers with these skills have been heavily recruited for over 12 months and we do not see any sign of demand slowing in these areas.

In terms of job titles, Microsoft alone has averaged over 4,000 open positions on a daily basis over the past six months. In general, roughly 15% of these positions (600) are for software developers, about 10% of these positions (400) are for SDETs (software testers), and about 10% of these positions (400) are for technical program managers.

Keeping your skill set current is a key component of your career growth. You can get information about Volt's technical training classes at http://www.vteOnline.com or send an e-mail message to techTraining@volt.com.
